Brain plasticity’s founding question is “how adaptable is the brain at different ages?” The brain develops in structural and functional features as it ages. The “plasticity curve” exponentially decays. Newborns and children are the most plastic, meaning their brains are highly adaptable and capable of forming new connections rapidly. This is why young children can learn new skills, such as languages or musical instruments, more easily than adults.

As people age, their brains become less plastic, but this doesn’t mean they lose all ability to adapt and learn. Adults can still form new neural connections, but the process is slower and often requires more effort and repetition. This ongoing ability to change and adapt throughout life is crucial for recovery from brain injuries and for learning new information and skills. Although, the brain’s plasticity does play a crucial role in patients’ ability to fully recover (ie. children’s ability to fully recover easily and quickly).

The concept of brain plasticity has significant implications for education, therapy, and rehabilitation. Understanding how and when the brain is most adaptable can help in designing effective interventions and strategies for learning and recovery. For instance, early childhood education can leverage high plasticity to build foundational skills, while rehabilitation programs for stroke patients can use targeted exercises to promote neural reorganization and recovery.

Plasticity's functional role also plays into relationships. Multiple studies proved that childhood or highschool relationships, platonic or romantic, are either unbreakable or destructive. The brain will mold to reflect other people’s values and opinions or stay rigid. Older relationships form over predetermined personalities and beliefs whereas adolescent relationships are chemically bonded because the brain will morph due to

Overall, brain plasticity underscores the remarkable adaptability of the human brain, highlighting its capacity to change and grow in response to experiences, challenges, and learning throughout a person’s life.
